m-spatial’s most valuable asset is its highly skilled and motivated team, which has been drawn from backgrounds in mobile data services, search and the analysis, management and delivery of geo-spatial data.

As a result, m-spatial is uniquely qualified to deliver state-of-the-art Local Search and Share technology and applications for use in the web, mobile and satnav environments.

Executive Directors and Senior Management

Rick Smith, Business Development Director and CEO

Rick Smith Rick is CEO and also responsible for leading the sales and business development activities at m-spatial. With 15 years experience in the geospatial industry sector, he has spent recent years working with the Mobile Operators across Europe helping to develop the proposition for location-based value added services and delivering solutions to meet these requirements.

Rick began his career in technical roles as a consultant and application developer with the leading GIS vendors, working in Europe, USA and Asia Pacific. He joined Xmarc in 1996 where he held senior positions in operational management and sales.

Adrian Cuthbert D.Phil, Technical Director and co-founder

Adrian Cuthbert Adrian is responsible for leading the design and architectural development of m-spatial’s products. With over 15 years experience in the geographic information systems industry, he has held a number of senior level positions in specialist mapping systems providers.

Prior to founding m-spatial, he was Director of Technology at Laser-Scan, where he played a key role in the development of the company’s product range including object life-cycle definition, data and topology modelling and portrayal.

Jon Billing, Product Development Director and co-founder

Jon Billing Jon leads the development and delivery of m-spatial’s products. He has held a number of senior technical roles during his 13 years in the geographic information systems business.

As Director of Development at Laser-Scan – the geographic information and mapping systems provider – he was responsible for all aspects of product development from design through to second line support, dealing with an international client base in markets including telecoms, utilities, defence and mapping agencies.

Non-Executive Directors

In addition to the broad skills and experience of its executive team, m-spatial also benefits from the advice provided by members of its funding partners by virtue of their non-executive directorships.

Robert Hook PhD, MIEEE, Chairman, Esprit

Bob is an electronic and communications engineer by training, and was a director of Cambridge Consultants Limited for ten years prior to founding Prelude in 1984. He built Prelude up into the UK’s leading early-stage technology venture capital investment company, raising three funds, and led its merger with Cazenove Private Equity in 2006 to form Esprit, of which he is Chairman. With a portfolio mainly in the physical sciences, sector, Bob has played an instrumental role in the formation of a number of companies and serves as a director of Cambridge Positioning Systems, ZBD displays, m-spatial, and Polatis. His past investments include Fillfactory and Xaar.
 
Bob was a founding member of the European Venture capital Association’s High Tech Committee, and also a past member of the British venture Capital Association High Tech Committee.

Tim Brown, Partner, i.t. and telecoms, Alta Berkeley

Tim joined Alta Berkeley in 1998 after spending three years in the 3i early stage technology team. Prior to that, he completed an MBA at Cranfield. His roots lie in a technical training (BSc Hons First Class in Physics from Manchester University) and a ten year career in high tech industry specialising in semiconductor manufacturing equipment and associated technologies such as Radio Frequency (RF) electronics. He held positions as a process design engineer at INMOS, product manager at Surface Technology Systems, sales manager at Laybold Heraeus and consultant project manager in the RF Division of the JET European nuclear fusion programme.

Dermot Berkery, General Partner, Delta Partners

Dermot Berkery joined Delta Partners in 1999 as a General Partner. He serves on the board of Seewhy Software and Sensl. He was also previously on the board of Farran Technology (sold in 2005 to Smiths Industries) and Similarity Systems (sold in 2006 to Informatica Inc.). Before joining Delta, he was a Senior Manager with McKinsey & Co. Having worked in McKinsey, Atlanta for 4 years, he returned to Dublin in 1995 to grow McKinsey’s presence in Ireland. From 1995 to 1998, he helped Irish companies in a range of sectors to develop and pursue accelerated growth strategies. Prior to McKinsey, he was a Senior in the Corporate Financial Services Division of Arthur Andersen in Dublin and London, where he specialised in financial restructurings. A graduate of University College Dublin in Commerce, he holds an MBA with distinction from the Harvard Business School and is qualified as a Chartered Accountant.
